I was replacing my outdrive water pump and noticed the oil seal in the upper half of the outdrive had come apart. It's the seal where the driveshaft goes through when you mate the lower and upper halves togeter. The seal is located in the upper housing, next to the water pocket cover. I ordered a new one and installed it, now when I mate the two halves together (upper and lower outdrive halves), the oring on the driveshaft pushes the seal up into the upper housing which breaks the seal.
I'm sure many of you who read this may be scratching your head in confusion. It's tough to describe. I need help figuring out how to keep the new seal from sliding up into the upper housing when you reassemble the two together.
Thanks!!!!

I.... now when I mate the two halves together (upper and lower outdrive halves), the oring on the driveshaft pushes the seal up into the upper housing which breaks the seal....

Glad to hear that someone else sees what I see :D

Bin the 'O' ring.... Replacement drive-shafts don't have the 'O' ring groove for precisely that reason.

There was a Merc service bulletin about it in the 80's, but I'm damned if I can find it.

Ayuh,... Like Chris says,... Toss that O-ring,+ put it together...
It's Unneeded,+ was deleted in later models...

Sounds good. I was worried about sea water getting into the outdrive by not using the oring but by the sounds of it, I don't need it (or the outdrive doesn't). I feel a lot better putting it back together now.
Thanks a lot!!!!
Now it's time to do all 3 bellows next, uugghhhh. Don't be suprised if I post any questions if I have difficulty with them.
:D
