My old motor is no longer worth the money to fix it so I am breaking down an buy a "new" used one. Ideally I would want to take it for a test drive but the one I found isn't on a boat. It is a 2001 60 hp 2-stroke, almost exactly what i'm looking for. I just trying to find out everything I need to know before I move on it and ask the right questions and look for the right stuff so I don't get a lemon. Right now all I know is it has 113 , 115, and 116 psi on the three cyl., looks clean in the pics and has a "new" foot. Any advice would be great as this is a pretty good deal, and those pretty good deals have a way of costing more in the long run sometimes.

Re: Buying a used motor.

The compression is good,WHY did the lowerunit need to be changed?why is the seller have it for sale, you could do a spark check ,remove the sparlplugs, get a spark tester, attach to all 3 plug wires, take neg from a 12 volt battery and positive touch the starter lug long enough to see if it sparks,no harness/key is needed, what can the seller tell you about the eng?do you know seller.Yiou can have great spark, great compression, but eng could have a rod bearing going bad.etc.not seeing it run is always a big gamble, unless you know the seller,OR if the Price is worth the gamble, what about controls?does trim and tilt work?

The guy is upgrading hp on a pontoon to a 115. No remote controls but I already have found some for a $100 on ebay. Trim and tilt works and he says I can listen to it run. Lower unit he said he hit a rock with a ss prop, so I have to take that at face value. Otherwise I will be sure to investigate everything you have laid out for me and thanks for all the help.

I inspect a new motor based upon how much I am paying for it. If it is cheep, I don't get past compression test and gear oil inspection for condition. If they want more $$ I check for spark and prop condition, paint condition etc.
