88 evinrude 28 spl cold natured

I have a 28 spl that takes f o r e v e r to warm up it starts easy just runs rough a long time but when it warms up it runs like a scalded dog little ruff on Idle but not bad I cleaned the carb put on a new fuel pump and water pump last summer right after i bought it I dont know alot about boat motors, does it have a thermostat that was maybe taken out I dont know.

Your motor does have a thermostat and that could explain your poor cold idling problem. A thermostat is suppose to stay closed until the motor warms up. Then when the engine reaches I think at around 160-175 degrees F, the thermostat would open up. Sometimes previous owners would take them out, especially if the boat was run in warm waters like Florida. That is not a good practice.

bad, or none existing tstat could easily cause you problems. opertation temp for that motor is 140-160 F.

even in Florida they need tstats too cheap to put them in. causes rough idleing, excess carbon build up, early death. unfortunately to check the water jacket has to come off the cylinder head on that motor. not a bad job as long as a bolt does not break.

took the cover off and no t stat put one in and took it out today runs great thanks for the help guys

I have one other question about the t stat since there was not one in the motor I had nothing to go by so I put the gasket in first and the the t stat next is this correct I couldnt find a good pic in the manual
