How much does "Home made" on the title hurt?

I bought a Lowe (Hull ID LWN******87) 1987 30' tritoon that needs a bit of work. However, after getting it home I went over the paperwork again and the title says it's a Home Made boat.

Called the PO back and asked what the heck and he said that the title had been lost long ago and the only way to get a new title was to call it Home Made. I really do understand the why behind it because Missouri sucks to try and get a new title for a boat but I am wondering just how big a hit resale value is going to take.

Thoughts? Would it make a difference to you if you were buying it?

I think most people would understand....If I was selling it though I would let the buyer know sooner than later....like maybe once the money was in my hand but before he drove out the driveway:D.

No really, I know they do it with trailers all the time. I would guess the owner you bought it from did not lose the title as he should have been able to order a replacement....he probably bought it without a title and went the home made route....now that its done and titled it should not be a problem. Will every potential buyer feel that way....maybe not but I dont think it will hurt you in the future.

If a buyer knows boats/trailers and what he's looking at then he should understand "home made." If not.... well, enough siad. ;) But I do agree with the previous post that I would let the buyer know. As for hurting resale value....NAH !!

If you want to fix it call them (DMV or whatever it is called on MO.) and ask about how to correct it or fill in the paperwork with the correct HID for you to receive title with, then see if they catch it. If they do catch it, let them see the boat to verify the HID. In CA the DMV will do VIN verification for vehicles and trailers. Tell them the previous guy must have messed it up. I'd play dumb, but that's not too hard for me.:)

by the letter of the law it is not legal if the boat was not home built.... practically speaking a 23 year old toon doesn't have a book value but rather it has a practical value..... If it's clean with nice seats and everything works it is worth quite a bit....... If it's rotton beat up and trashed it's worth squat.... the goofy title is just one more detail to figure in

what shape is it in and how much did you pay for it?

I think it would give me pause, but I'm picky about legal paperwork. I expect it to be correct for the item I'm buying. Too many scammers out there.

Hassles with DMV can make for a never-ending problem. Not worth the potential hassle.

If I bought a stolen boat, I'd be sure to register it as home made. Sure don't want the computer to bring up the Serial number and have the owner come and confiscate it from me.

As long as it's a legal and registerable title, it wouldn't concern me at all. Especially since there are so many no-paperwork boats out there.

I am concerned about the chain damaging my fiberglass bow as I raise, lower, deploy, and store the anchor. With a minimum of 6 feet of chain, about 4 feet of chain and the anchor would be essentially hanging overboard during short hops to different spots for fishing. Guess I should haul it all up.

What size chain for 60-100 feet of water and a 16 foot trihull?

I boat on small lakes--or large but long with lots of coves--occasionaly chop and wind, but always within hailing distance of the shore.

Well I think Bubba would like to sell it for more than $200 so that's why he cares.
