Ok, searched and read all the posts I could find on this subject. (Thanks for all the input, IBoats community is the BEST!!!!) I Bought a good used 3/4" tapered shaft wheel from Ebay, Got my neighbor to help, found a BF Hammer and went to work.

Screwed the nut down on the shaft, I pulled hard, He beat hard and then....

OH CCCCRRRRRAAAAPPPPPP!

He missed, hit the plastic wheel housing and .....

Now I am left with this.....

Do not believe I can get a 3 jawed Gear puller on it, but I WILL try. From your experiences, any suggestions??? Heat???
Being a purist, I want to keep the Cable/Pulley steering but would listen to Pros and Cons of converting to Teleflex. Would it work on my 1962 Evinrude 40HP LARK???

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I would use a MAP gas torch on it (pick up from auto parts place, sears, lowes /Home Depot or the like).. should be less than $20..

Get a flat tipped screwdriver under the "bushing" and run the flame of the torch over the bushing untill it pops off... I bet a few passes of the torch and it will pop right of.... let the shaft cool and put the new one back on!

Dremel would work, but would also take a while to go through that much material... You will spend more time buying the torch than it will take to pop everything loose for ya...

Heat it up with a flame. VERY CAREFULLY! Then pry it off with a prybar.
