1978 35 evinrude what lower units will work

Hello,
I have a 1978 35 evinrude with thru hub exhaust. It has a screwed up lower unit. Does anyone know what other years and HP motors would be interchangable if i can find a used one? any help would be very helpful

I found a 1982 model does anyone know if they will interchange? Its shows a different part number but i guess around that time there was a different gear ratio.

I am no expert at all but that is a tricky lower unit. I only know because I own one that I am selling. (My powerhead blew)

The only that may work are the 1978 35 hp and the 25 hp depending on the model. 1979's may work if I remember right but not much crosses over to this particular model.

If you are local to Tampa, Fl, my lower unit and other parts are on Cl. I could even just ship you the gears, prop shaft, bearings, etc if thats all you need.

Good luck finding one.

Gearcases from any year 35 1976-1993 may work, but I've heard that there are some differences with later year models. The later made 20, 25, AND 30 HP motors are identical with the 35 excepting carburetor (for the 20, there is also an intake restriction). So, in a given year, those gearcases are certainly interchangeable. I have 1979, 1980, and 1983 model 35s, all those gearcases are interchangeable. I suspect but can't confirm that all through 1993 will work. I know that the driveshaft splines are the same, it's the question if the bolt pattern was always the same. In any case, you can easily find a complete gearcase on ebay.
