I have a Evinrude 1964 9422R 9.5 hp outboard. The other day I went fishing for the first time this year. Engine started on first pull. Ran great all the way to our destination,( 15 min cruise). On the way back, I opened her up full. She slowly lost power and died. I pumped a semi hard fuel bulb and she started right back up. Ran for 5 seconds and then lost power and died. I did this proceedure about ten times to get me back to the dock. I have ordered a Seloc manual. Any suggestions?

Was it pumping water??? If not, and you siezed it ten times, lots of luck. Could be junk by now.

Carb Float sticking?
Fuel pump not working?
Try to pump fuel from primer bulb as you go and see if the motor stays running

Thanks Mott will give a try. So if pumping the fuel bulb works, then it would be the fuel pump correct?
I did not seize the motor. I believe it was pumping water. I di not check. It started and ran fine, but only for 5 seconds at a time.

It could be. When I remove the gas line from my running motor to empty the carb, it runs for a good minute. So its not sounding like a pump. One way to tell though -> pull the hose from the carb and stick the end of the hose into a coffee can to catch all spills. Pull the cord, you should have a good couple gas pulses spit into the can. If it doesnot than its the pump.

Thanks for the advice will give a try. I took off the fuel filter bulb and took apart. It was clean. When i tried to put back together the filter was loose a bit in the bulb. is that correct? I did not want to break the bulb.

Ok, so I got a manual and did some reading. I put the engine in a bucket and started it up. It ran agian for five seconds and there was quite a bit of water comming out the exhaust. I'm comfortable with the problem not being the water pump. So I started it again and looked else wher in the engine. I found that fuel was comming out of a port on the back of the carb.

Any thoughts. Looks like a carb rebuild is in order.

What port are you referring to?
If its not the throat of the carb then fuel should not be coming out. If fuel can get out than excess air can get in. Cousing an impropper mixture. Try and find and repair the leak. maybe a hose, or loose bolt.
Recheck you your low speed needle. (I had mine vibrate loose one time, causing a similar issue)

Maybe I should not have called it a port. Fuel is comming out where the arrow is pointing to. I cant find a name for the particular part in any diagram. It is the long medal tube like shape above the low throtle linkage.

Re: evinrude 1964 9422r

So i have taken off the carb and broken it down. I did not find a major problem. So I'm hopping that is was a piece of gook lodged some where that I did not see. I want to order a carb kit for it. But I have a new problem. The low speed needle assembly with packing nut. The drawing that I have shows a spring and a washer and a o ring in with the needle. Mine does not have any of that. The needle was screwed in about 20 turns and when it came out nothing came out with it. I looked down in the hole where the needle inserts into and saw a washer. I removed the clear washer no problem. Then under that was a piece of black plastic that looked like a thicker washer. I tried to remove but it did not want to come out. I nned help. I dont want to order the wrong carb kit.

Most of the time carb trouble is a blockage or a float stuck open or closed. That "port" I think is a vent. If the float needle is not sticking I would clean with carb cleaner the blow out every orifice with compressed air. Will fix 90 per cent of the time.

I have found that the 382048 carb kit does come with the packing washers. Thanx for your help.

I had fuel leaking in the same place as you describe. A good carb. cleaning and a new carb. kit fixed it for me. Mine is a 1973. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: evinrude 1964 9422r

carb rebuild went smooth. Took it out for a test run yesterday. It did well. Ive got a rough idle no matter what I do with the needle. And a hickup until I get above half throtle.

Re: evinrude 1964 9422r

At slow speed a hiccup (sneeze) is usually fixed by turning your slow speed idle adjustment a little richer. Sounds like you might have tried that but thought I would mention it. Rick.

I know you posted this 2 years ago but I'm about to overhaul one myself. Did the Seloc manual help you any?
