mercruiser 12o lower unit filling ?'s

Hey guys i have a 1969 cruiser's inc 18' with a 120 mercruiser in it.... My question is how do i fill the outdrive. I know for the lowest unit i fill from bottom until comes out vent.... but now what has me puzzled is that the upper unit also has 3 seperate plugs 1 labeled fill and 1 labeled vent, i have never seen this before so i just want to make sure i get this right. And oh ya can someone help me with what model outdrive i have?

Howdy,

Well to be sure, you should post your drive serial number. You most likely have a Mercruiser #1 drive if it is indeed a '68 model.

If you go up to the "Adults Only" sticky, you should be able to find a service manual that will cover it.

Basically you have it right. Fill it from the bottom until it runs out the upper hole.

The file there is pretty big. Unless you have cable internet, or fast DSL, forget it. Go to the library and do it.

Just right click on the file and select "save-as"

Fill from the lower unit until it comes out the upper unit vent.
Pump the oil in nice and slow so you don't trap any air in the unit.

Its entirely possible that you have one of the old 1A/1B/1C EZ Shift outdrives that had seperate upper and lower chambers that you had to fill individually. Have a read on this file I made, it should help you identify your drive...
