Hi Guys:
I need some opinions please.
Last month my sister was remarried and I finally met my new brother-in-law. It turns out that early in his career he worked on the design team for the OMC stringer drive. Later on he moved over to Mercruiser and was the head of the design team for the MCM 470 and all the variants. He told me that the 470 was designed from the get go to bolt up directly to an OMC stringer!
When he retired he fixed up an 18 foot Bayliner cuddy with an MCM 470 attached to a Stringer drive just as he described. Not only that, but he designed the thing to run on McDonalds deep fryer oil and Vaseline 50-50 mixture. He said when he changed the engine oil at the end of the season it polished up the oxidized gelcoat on his boat just like new. He also said that the parts are readily and cheaply available and he gets 250 HP, 50 mpg and can run his Bayliner at 65 MPH all day long at 1200 rpm! Further, he fixed up a set of home-made hydrofoils on the stringer drive and planed at 3.4 mph.
When he rebuilt the deck he replaced the stringers with 3 layers of corrugated cardboard on end, covered with 2 coats of waterproof Elmer?s glue and the floor is 3/8ths D-grade OSB with 3 coats of interior semi-gloss kitchen paint and he said it holds up just fine.
I think I hit all the high spots, but what do you guys think?
