I have a 9.9hp fourstroke merc longshft that was used as a kicker on my boat. I bought the tiller handle set to convert it and was wondering if I can convert it to a shortshaft to throw on a jon boat? If so where would I get the conversion parts?

Could I buy a transom jack plate to do that or do those work along the lines of a tilt? I've never really seen them used before, just seen that they arent that expensive for a manual model.

jack plate yes.If the boat is aluminum you could just get a peace welded on to raise it up.

Thanks for the help. I have to get a boat yet, was just going to find something used and cheap so I might just make sure it has an aluminum transom.

Re: 9.9hp merc fourstroke

Hello. Newbie. Hope this is the right forum. I have a 2007 merc 9.9 long shaft on our Pearson 26 sailboat. Two problems, 1) while shifting from reverse to forward the shaft sometimes bounces out and locks with the prop just at the surface spinning and nearly useless. Tilt lock is on, so can't figure out why this happens. Any ideas? Problem 2) is that when we tilt the motor out, it won't lock. When we're out sailing we need to use bungies to keep it from tilting back down. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

If you get fiberglass or wood you could use a peace of treated wood and bolt it on for a small motor.
