hello
question for you guys.

first off let me say this was the first time ive evr messed with an i/o.my friend has a boat(1988 four winns3.0 omc o/d)that he left the plug in and rain filled it up pretty good last summer while sitting in the yard.
we drained it and i worked to get it running again.for some reason i had to disconnect the shift module to get it to start.i dont remember if we ever took it out again after that before winter showed up.

we went to take it out the other day and a nasty noise was coming from the back.i thought it sounded like a dry outdrive or something so we put it back on the trailer.
the out drive was full and clean.
so my next thought was universal joints.so i got to the bellow and loosend it thinking i would be able to see the drive shaft.
well, water poured out of there.so i started to research the net,and found out about gimbal bearings.

well i dove right into the project.
i had the shifter in reverse when i pulled the outdrive off.
i could see the the shifter bar was going to line up with the shifter do hickey,so i thought i should be good.new bearings gaskets bellow and universal joints, put back together and took it out.
everything seems good but it doesn't want to shift from forward to nuetral while the engine is running.

now my question is,did i do something wrong with the shifter or is that shift module not being plugged in causing the problem?

ty for any help.

1 more thing.when we brought it back to the house,i tried shifting it with motor off and went no problem.i had my buddy put pressure on the prop(engine off of coarse)and treied again but it wouldnt go with pressure on the prop.

i hooked the shift module back up and started it and it seemed to be stalling the engine like it should when i switched gears.

It is also supposed to be in neutral when you take it off and put it back on.

You need the ESA plugged in to shift it out of gear while you are in the water. Out of the water it doesn't matter.

I just did my cobra,,,thanks to my cracked bellows, new gimbal,u joint, bellows, gasket, etc.
Yup, cobra should go back on in neutral position.
put it in neutral, pull the drive out, check to see if its alinged properly.

make sure both the shifter rod on the drive is in neutral (turn the driveshaft and the prop shaft should not turn) and the shift control is in neutral (the bellcrank that fits into the opening of the shift rod will stick straight out at 90 degrees to the pivot housing....

That means your shift cable is just about done for. Be prepared, you will be putting in a new cable very soon.
