Can't get it to go in gear now. Not running, still needing to remove and clean carb, just checking things out and it is stuck in neutral. Any suggestions?

Thanks again and God Bless, Ryan

Re: Evinrude 1968 6hp fisherman... again

Have you done anything to/with the shift mechanism?..if not...turn the flywheel with the recoil starter and see if it will go into gear then. If not...welll....hope someone else chimes in and that manual arrives soon. I recently did a carb on a 6hp. and can confirm Tashasdaddy's opinion that the starter recoil spring is a pita. This is what I did and you can take it for what it's worth....remove both screws on the top plate....loosen the rear screw on the bottom plate and loosen the front bottom screw four of so turns so that the bottom retaining plate will drop down some and allow the entire starter to cant forward slightly..WORD OF CAUTION..this is putting pressure on a weak point on the outter spring where it slides into a groove in that lower housing. Easy does it, or it'll snap...and yes it did..and yes I did. Just be real easy with the assembly and use the thinnest wrench you can find on that carb nut. I had an old ignition wrench about an 1/8" thick that I bent slightly to do this...best of luck

Can't get it to go in gear now.
It will not necessarily engage a gear if it it not running. It is a dog clutch and if the dog is wrongly aligned with the gears it won't engage. Spin the prop or turn the flywheel and it probably will.

My owners manual tells me not to attempt to engage the gears if it is not running!

If it still does not then you really do have a problem. You will have to try to determine if the shifter is seized at the top or if anything is wrong down below.

Yea, something ain't right, waiting for the manual. I tried spinning the prop and then the flywheel by hand, while trying to coax it into gear, but the pin/key that holds the gear shifter in has sheared and the whole handle now spins freely and will come out. I did not put what I thought was excessive pressure on it, and the end of it was dry as a bone dirty (grease cake), so I am worried that something is seized and this pin/key was already almost sheared when I got it... Yeah, I am running into problems with the recoil starter, but the carb was clean as a whistle... Finally got it to fire without carb cleaner once or twice, but can't keep it running. I plan on taking it to someone, as this is taking far more time than I have to give to it. Will try to maintain it from there. I appreciate all of the input.

God Bless, Ryan

Anyone know of a reasonable tech/mech in the Chattanooga/Dayton, TN area?

Not taken the Philips headed screw out of the gearcase in mistake for the oil drain plug I suppose.
That's the pivot pin for the lever down in the gearcase.
Difficult to get things correctly re-located if you have!

No, just the 2 common screws marked "drain" and "vent." Found a guy here in Dayton that was recommended by someone at the parts store to take it to. He said that he would pull the lower unit first to see if he could locate the problem there before proceding to the supposedly smaller stuff with the running issue. He said that if the splines were messed up that it could be a more costly repair than most would want to invest in this motor unless we could find a "donor" lower.

Thoughts?

Thanks and God Bless, Ryan

Ryan, if you haven't already...go to shop.2.evinrude.com and look up your motor by year and model no. The parts diagrams will show you what you're getting into pricewise on parts alone. If you take it to a shop be sure to get an estimate first as it won't be quick and easy. Best of luck

Go to this website http://shop.evinrude.com/ then to the electronic parts catalog.

Or direct to it at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ Too many dots in the address given earlier by AlTn

Locate the year model, then the Hp followed by the model number finally the section of the engine you want parts and prices for
