Does this 9.9 Evinrude need "new" lower unit?

In process of first lower unit repair and this is the first lower unit I've seen up close and personal. Looks like a previous repair was made to build up the water pump base (photos attached). When plate is installed, it looks like a flat fit. The "inlet" gap is the plate looks unblocked when the plate sits on the rebuild.

Does this look reasonable to continue to install a water pump kit (on order) or should I possibly look for another lower unit? This lower unit has obviously been in salt water and it took me about 2 hours to chip out the salt & oxide crude from the front cavity and finally I have water draining out the forward hole.

Proceed with this unit or should I look for a more promising lower unit?

The support group has been so helpful so far. Perhaps this old '79 will see the water again.

It's also pretty common to see them ground down and 2 plates put in there.

I have a spare housing off an 83 if you want it, just pay shipping, swap all your goodies into it.

I have removed 5 bolts out of the lower unit and removed the slider from the shifter so its free to drop but the lower unit is looking like the side opposite of the prop is a bit loose (a slight split at the gasket) but on the prop side it is still very tight. Am I missing something?
