Hi all. My 1974 25hp evinrude jumps out of forward . Can I turn the clutch dog 180 degrees to fix the problem or do I need to change the forward gear, clutch dog and the cradle? What is the fix for this problem? The clutch dog is worn along with the forward gear a little. And where would I get these parts as cheap as possible as the motor is old,but runs great. Thanks,Roger:confused:

I don't know where you get parts but I think a lot of guys just swap the foot.
I'd check ebay first.

How do you know the dog is worn, did you pull it?

Re: Jumps out of gear

You can reverse the clutch dog, but remove it from the prop shaft verry carefully. There is a neutral detent in there-2 steel balls and a spring. If you aren't careful, you will be chasing these steel balls all over your shop. :eek:Then it will jump out of reverse.

If foreward gear is worn, probably best to change dog, gears, and might as well reseal the lu while you ae in there.

They ae really simple, just pay attention to how it came apart and get a repair manual.

Re: Jumps out of gear

The parts are available new, but are prohibitively expensive ($500-600). Look for a good used lower unit. You can flip the dog and see it it solves your problem, however, it is not a "fix" its a postponement of the inevitable. If you are going to be in there you might as well do it right and do it once.

If the forward gear is bad and it probably is since the clutch dog detent (ball bearings) work great to keep bad clutch dogs in place then it needs to be changed. Both gears and dog are a matched set and should be replaced together. Of course, I have mixed and matched lower unit gears and parts lots of times with no problems.
