Re: Tach 10 pole to 20 pole converter.

A bridge rectifier is a rectifier, not a pulse counter. And a 20 pole alternator does not output 20 pulses/rev. It outputs 10 pules/rev. One pulse = 1/2 of sign wave going positive (180 degrees) and 1/2 pulse going negative (180 degrees) and it takes two poles to do that. That produces 10 full pulses/rev. So what you need is a frequency divider that can convert a varying sign wave input and cut the frequency by 1/2. Remember that the frequency is variable from approximaately 550 rpm at idle to 6000. You can do the math as to the frequency range involved.

Re: Tach 10 pole to 20 pole converter.

The voltage regulator goes to the AC side of the bridge rectifier where there are pulses. Whatever the number of pulses, if you divide by two it will provide an output for a 10 pole tach as opposed to a 20 pole tach.

A bridge rectifier will output positive pules, one for each half of the sine wave. The pulse will be filtered by the battery into DC. Pulses will still be present at the output side of the bridge rectifier but at a reduced amplitude.

Any progress here? I wish I would have bought a 20 pole back when they were $25 on ebay!

I bought the TSD at 1/2 from Baker electronics Here Was worth the $40 not to have to mess with building it. The huge benefit I see here is now we can run any tach we want. I installed the Teleflex sterling array and love it.

you are actually runing this? give some more info and maybe some pics... as to installation, did you get the adjustable one? what pole tach did you buy to use with this?

Re: Tach 10 pole to 20 pole converter.

Since this is a tach thread, I got a question about it.. mine reads just fine, moves ok, but will not go above 2100 rpm.. needle is not sticking, and I know the engine is revving higher than that... it just stays there.. when I back off, it will drop smoothly from that point on.. 4 cyl 2 stroke. Is there a setting/switch on the tach? Maybe I have a wire in the wrong spot?

@ Josh - I didn't get the adjustable one but the choice is yours on that. I actually wish I had because the first one I bought was .25 I erroneously assumed that 5P meant pole I have since learned that it meant pulse. Just go with a tach that offers a 5P setting and you will be good to go. It is lovely to be able to buy a matching set of gauges. I was so excited to get the boat in the water the day I installed this I took no pictures of it installed. Once it stops raining I will get you one. The TSD box is the little black thing in the right hand corner.

@ Bob - I feel like we are missing part of the story. Did you recently install this tach or is it one that has been there?

The way you describe your boat gives me a bit of a guess. Most Tach's have a setting on the back of them that lets you set them for different engines. A setting of 4 cyl would not be correct for your boat. Depending on the engine the signal likely comes from the Stator. You need to find how many pulses your engine puts out per revolution. To tell you that we would need to know what engine it is.

Re: Tach 10 pole to 20 pole converter.

to Bad_Azs10.. the tach has been there.. Factory Cajun tach. I looked yesterday, it has settings numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4. ( no "pole" numbers). I have a 125 4 cyl. , 1988. Prestolite ign. I would suspect 4 is my choice but ya never know. My eyeballs can't see where it is set, unless I get a mirror and look back there.. rained yesterday, carpet soaked, had to get off my back under the dash!! (tryin not to lead the thread astray, but the tach guys are reading this!!)

Re: Tach 10 pole to 20 pole converter.

note:.. today, the tach starts at 2100 at idle, and goes up to 5000, it is definately reading too high now.. I Did turn the screw yesterday. Oh well, two more tries, I'll get it right, I suppose!

Yes, You will find when you start looking for gauges most Marine setups are sort of universal. For example the tach I bought is set up for 4/6/8 cylinder inboards and 2/3/4/5/6 pole outboards. You just select the position for your appplication. You can see the adjustment knob above in the pic of the back of the gauges. The tach is in the middle and the knob is just above the bracket on the left.

Also as promised...
