I need help! I have a 1985 85 hp force outboard that has no fire on all three cylinders. I have ohmed the stator wires as a friend of mine told me to do and got no readings whatsoever. What and where do I look next? I have just purchased this boat and motor in the last month and am trying to get the motor running. ANY HELP would be appreciated!

If you get no readings what so ever, then your stator is fried. Your stator generates the voltage for the ignition system

If you are have the ohm meter set to the right scale and get no readings the stator is fried. If the stator isn't fried, be sure that voltage is going to it (with the meter). Keep us posted on your progress.

Disconnect the white wires from the ignition switch and then try to start it. If it starts, your ignition switch needs to be replaced.

The white wires are used to ground the CDI modules to shut the engine off. If they are shorted to ground or you have a bad switch, the engine will not start.

It is very rare that all three CDI modules are shot. I have only seen it once and this was a guy who routinely motored it without grounding the high tension leads.

Thanks to all who tried to help me out on this problem. After many hours of head scratching I have found the problem. The kill switch is bad. I unplugged one of the wires to it and the darn thing took right off no prob whatsoever. Again thanks a bunch I appreciate all the help.:):D:D
