Hi Guys,

I finally got the boat on the water over easter, and it actually worked, very suprised :)

Anyway, I did have one issue, the bearing that the raw water pump belt connects to and is used to adjust the tension seized, and cause the belt to slip off and make me angry.

In any event, I un-seized the bearing, although it obviously needs to be replaced.

My main concern is that that adjustment unit and bearing is pretty dodgy, in that it took me about 10 goes to adjust it properly so it didnt just slip off the bearing.

I am wondering if I have a "dodgied up solution" or thats the way they are meant to be.

And also if I can replace that tensioning unit with something more reliable that wont allow the belt to slip off.

If this doesnt make sense let me know and I will take some photos.

thanks

Hi Guys,

Ok Below are the photos, as you can see its the bearing that needs to be replaced (not that thats obvious) but I would really like a more stable solution, so the belt cant roll off, which it did when the bearing seized, but it may have rolled off and rubbed against the bearing, as there are melting marks on the bearing and on the side.

(Forgive the state of the bilge, spilt half a bottle of Transmission fluid in there when cleaning the boat out on the weekend)

As far as I know, Merc doesn't use a bearing like that. What is the Mercruiser SN from the tag over your starter.
Looks like you have a backyardigan fix (Rodbolt name that I like) No pulley on bearing, wrong belt, etc.

Hi,

yeah I suspected it was a backyarder job.

If you mean engine serial I just replaced the engine, but I know the old serial was 0f002118, which all that gear was transferred from.

Little annoying that the mercruiser authorized repairer that works on the engine (and has spent tonnes of hours on it) hasn't raised that as an issue.

May be a new long block, but bet it's all the same accessories put on the new long block.
Part number for the pulley (with bearing in the pulley) is 865598. If they changed the belt to find one to fit only the bearing, the proper belt is 57-69143Q

Those are Mercruiser numbers.

So from ebay:
http://compare.ebay.com/like/400052699344

Picture "borrowed"

So it looks to me that I am running the bearing without the plastic around it.

Some seem to have the plastic around the pulley that is flat, some is grooved, I assume I want the flat model right?

The grooved ones are for serpentine belts. You have V belts

Forgive me for my ignorance - but I have never seen a tensioner like that for a v belt - only a serpentine. How common is that??

Merc used them for several years.

In your photo either the belt is stretched badly or its the wrong size.

Probably due to the plastic part missing off the pulley bearing. Not the bearing adjuster is all the way at the top of it's adjustment.
