Just picked up an older outboard. The # on the tag is: 178 2127 A

I don't really know the brand, it appears nowhere.

Thanks in advance!

Can't make sense out of the number, but for sure it is a Scott-Atwater or McCulloch motor, around 1960-ish. (McCulloch bought the old Scott-Atwater company) S/A - McC made motors under their own brand name and also Elgin for Sears, Firestone for the tire company, and Wizard for Western Auto. Take your pick.

Yup, looks like an early 60's Scott-McCulloch 35 or 40 hp.

Re: Old outboard identification help please!

Pretty sure the 56 motors were green and gold or some such.
White is probably 59 or newer. The 7.5 and 9 were compact low profile
I'm pretty sure yours is a 12 or 14.First appeared in 60.The 28 is big and has a different gearcase.
I think the 2 bulges on the gearcase are a dead giveaway.
A look under the cover might help pin it down.

I've got a 56' 10 HP Scotty, and its green and gold, also, sheet metal cowling, not glass. That styling reminds me of the mid to late 60's johnnyrudes that I have. I'm not saying that its not a Scotty, or even a 56, just doesn't match what I have.

Re: Old outboard identification help please!

Found it. It is a 1959 Wizard 10hp, made by Scott-McCulloch. Wizard is a Western Auto brand name. The Wizard model number (should be) MLM-6910A

No meaning to pee on your parade, but that motor has been severely overheated. You may not have anything there worth messing with. At the very least, the head gasket and exhaust cover gaskets will have to be replaced. When you get the exhaust covers off, you will be able to see if the pistons are scored. They probably are. And needless to say, the water pump needs repair.

Wow, I can't thank you enough. I've already decided to either part it out or sell it as is.

I've already purchased a 1980's Mercury 9.8 for the boat. Especially after realizing the condition of this engine, its ultimate reliability and the difficulty of acquiring parts for it.

Any idea how much this engine would be worth, if anything?

Not much to a collector/restorer that knows what he is getting. You might get more from somebody that doesn't have a clue. You have a PM.
