Metal prop for 4hp Evinrude 4606M

This is the weedless version and comes with a two blade plastic prop. It tears up way too easy. Is there any way I can switch to a metal prop, 3 blade preferable? Even if I have to modify the Prop clutch and Prop Hub.

I just got the little motor running and the prop already has some chunks of plastic gone from hitting drifting logs.

Any advise would be appreciated, Doug

You might be able to change the shaft and be able to use the prop from 1973 and older. The metal props are secured by a nut and spacers and stuff. I haven't tried it, so can't make any promises. It would probably be cheaper to buy replacement plastic props though.

Edit: The cheapest way out might be to buy a complete lower unit from a pre-1973 parts motor. Or the whole parts motor if the lower unit is good.

that is what the plastic props are for, to protect the lower unit from damage. suggest a spotter on the bow.

Thanks, at least that gives me something to look for to change to a metal prop. This is a 1976 model and you say pre-1973 model 4606M.
Would really like to get away from the weedless design, not very many weeds but lots of logs.
Thanks again, Doug

Thanks F R, I checked and the Gearcase Standard Drive on the 4hp Evinrude 1970 - 1972 model 4238S or 4206S looks like it will bolt up directly to my model 4606M weedless just right.
If I can find one of these lower end drive units I'll grab it. If not I'll just have to put up with the old one.
Thanks again, Doug

I have the same 4hp 4606m weedless evinrude, and are running into the same prop problems. Did you ever find a fix so you can put on a metal prop?

I by mistake bought a 327677 7 1/2 x 6 1/2 lH prop.

apparently there's weedless version of this motor and none weedless. The prop dealer forgot to tell me that.

so now I have metal prop but can't put on my weedless lower unit. I thought you might have a fix.

thanks.
