Today I bought a 1987 Imperial VC200 with a Merc crusier 165. 4 cylinder. The guy I bought it from said it sat for a couple years...I took it home put a battery in it, turned it over, got nothing, no farts, no almosts, nothing, just cranking.

I checked for spark had good spark, I poured gas down the carb, still got nothing.

Should there be something I should check for? I am usually pretty good at getting motors running. Im stumped.

I was also told the boat is internally cooled, there is a tank for antifreeze.

Please any help or anything you guys can tell me would be great thanks! :)

Was it cranking real slow? If so, it won't start. If it was cranking at the proper speed, it's time to do a compression test. Since you have spark, and gas buy putting fuel directly into the carb and get nothing, you can't possibly have compression.

Re: Just bought a boat...

I had a couple hours of sunlight when I got home from work, I fully charged the Trojan deep cycle battery today at work. I hooked it up and it kept on cranking with nothing.

This is what I did, took all spark plugs out, cleaned them and checked gap all worked out well. I took the cap off where all the plugs go onto and cleaned the surfaces.

Did a little prime for a good time and that was it, it started up with out any problems.

Ran for a few seconds then I shut it down.

This is what I have to do, im going to do the impeller, change all the fluids (oil, coolant, outdrive oil) Then I am going to take it to the lake on the trailer and let it run and see what happens..

Now does anyone know how much oil it takes? and how much outdrive oil it takes?

Would be better to do your testing on muffs.
Check the bellows, u-joints, gimble bearing, alignment and service the waterpump BEFORE you take it to the lake.
