How do I know where the throttle cable goes?

I put a new motor to me on my pontoon last weekend(90hp) Mercury. I haven't completed hooking everything up, I hope to complete that tonight though. How do I know which cable goes where? I am sure it makes a difference which is on top. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Shift the controller into forward or reverse, the gear shift cable will move first
then the throttle cable will move.

Normally the throttle cable is on top. As was said, the gear shift cable moves first as you mve the control from neutral to forward.

Move the linkages on the motor. One will move the ignition timing and carburetor linkages (throttle), the other will move linkages that make the prop spin freely/engage (shift).

Just like everybody else has said... But, if you get them reversed, your throttle will only go about half way. Don't try to force it, you'll just stretch cable. Just reverse them and you should be good to go.

Don't forget to adjust them. Your throttle should have a light pre-load and your shift should be dead on neutral. That means it's not moving the shift arm towards forward or reverse. Put it on the cable mount with the same amount of freeplay in both directions.
