4 hp 2 cyl fuel pump?

hey everybody i have a 4hp 2cyl outboard that runs great if you shoot a little gas in the carb. the carb isn't getting any fuel from the pump. i can not find the pump rebuild kit for it can i just bypass the pump, the outlet of the gas tank is higher than the carb. if not does any body know of a good source of parts for my outboard? the rest of the engine is in great shape, it has only seen water two times in its life and that was in 1982. it sat in my grandfathers shed for the rest of the time

Can you post up the serial number of the engine?

Once we have that, we can start looking for parts for you...

the serial number is 7127275. it says made in canada so i am guessing it is a canadian motor.

Yep, made in Canada... but we won't hold that against it.

This engine was known as a 'Gnat'... and only ran from 1976 to 1981. (and yours is a 1979)

Here's the rub... They don't have a fuel pump.... Just a tap... Check to make sure the tap is open.

i know it has a fuel pump because i can see it, from what i have read they could be added to the motor, if that is the case then i will just bypass the pump for now but i did find a source of parts so let the ordering begin. this motor will be pushing a 14 foot indian river canoe square back so i should be able to get around 9 mph at least.

This is as per the way Mercury built it. I don't disbelieve you about the pump... It just means it's not factory... So we would need pictures, or manufacturer details. It's a bit like asking about the CD player in a '57 Chevy...

well i bypassed the fuel pump, motor would fire up and run at high speed but when you went to idle it would die, after some searching i found out why they had put the pump on. they do make them run a little better. now i will be ordering the fuel pump rebuild as i have found a place that has it and the other parts that i need.
