OK, I guess I'll jump in with both feet. Is it true that this is actually the same engine as the mercury 2007 18 hp 4-stroke? I have heard that tohatsu/nissan makes the 30 hp and under line for mercury to mercury specs. I this true? I have an opportunity to buy a new in box 2007 18hp 4-stroke. if this rumor is not true, is this a good engine? powerwise, how will it compare to my mid-60's 10 hp johnson? I have a tracker 1542. I plan to add decks front and rear. with 2 big guys, and all our gear, will this motor get us up on plain? will it troll all day? will it run us 10 miles downstream to our fishing holes?

thanks for your help. I'm novice boat owner, be kind.

The Merc 4-strokes up to 30 hp are indeed Tohatsu motors. They idle down very nicely, and the 2- and 3-cylinder units are scary quiet/smooth. Durable as any, and more so than many. The 18 has not been built for a couple of years, BTW, so it's somebody's old stock. Prop it correctly, and you can probably plane fine.

The 18 hp will serve you just fine. I run a Nissan 18hp 4-stroke 2008 on my 16' lowe jon boat with a wood deck. It planes my jon quick and easily with power to spare. I do everything from tolling for muskies to running all over the lake for bass. This thing is smooth and quiet. This motor is very easy on gas and better yet helps maintain the trolling battery.
