Hi everone like to interduce my self.
My name is Emory and I live in South Georgia I am 67 years old and have been married to the same woman for 51 Year's, I enjoy life and nascar but my passion is Fishing.
My rig is a V-17 Bass Tracker. with a 50 HP Johnson.
I have a problem that I hope that someone can help me with. My lower unit on the Johnson develpoed a problem with the lower unit (Making weird Noise) so I bought this older Johnson that the lower unit was good in so I went and change the the lower unit.
The older unit that I want to use is Model number 50473M
and I want to change the lower unit to my Engine which is model number J50BELCDE.
Ok I put the older unit (50473M) onto My engine (J50BELCDE) everthing went togather just fine with a new water pump.(water pump was different) Linkage seem to be right. Got Netural it idles fine.
Now the problem is.
When I shift into Forward Gear The propeller runs in Reverse, when I shift Into reverse the propeller runs forward. was wanting to know if someone could help me with this problem.
Thank's

Re: prop running backward

The problem is that the 1974 gearcase is not compatible with your motor unless you have the 1974 linkage at the engine to change with it.

The older gearcase shift is the opposite of the newer one.

I'm not trying to highjack the thread, just wondering if he could run it like that if everything else bolts up?

Now for my next question.
I have the whole motor (50473m) Linkage intack, Changing the linkage over to the (J50BELCDE) is that something that a novice can do The nearest boat repair for me is 70 mile's away and it take's week's to get anything done. and Crappie season is here.
Thank's

I think that you can switch the parts.

Look at the diagrams in the parts catalogs for the two engines, the linkages show in the cylinder and crankcase diagrams. http://shop.evinrude.com/

Re: prop running backward

I live in a place with no parts or skills and where you have to do desperate stuff sometimes.
When I broke my remote ( one shift tang) I noticed the side mount remotes are built so they can mount on the port or starboard side.
To allow this they have two opposite tangs so you can hook up for the shift and throttle to go one way or the other.
So I changed to the other tang.
No problem except handle forward gave me reverse.
There may be something you could do at the remote to reverse the shift action.
