Volvo turns 1/4 turn and locks up update

Ok guys, it's been a while but I got back into my boat project. As a reminder, bought this boat last fall from an estate, hadn't been on the water for 3 years. It was winterized so I didn't mess with it last fall, and when I pulled it out to clean it up and get it going this spring, the motor turns about 1/4 turn and stops, turns back 1/4 tunr, stops. Pulled plugs, same.

I pulled the upper gearbox, motor doesn't turn. I'm thinking next step is to pull the head, maybe rust in a cylinder? Maybe something in a cylinder? Anybody have any experience that may help?

Second, worst case and it's something major in the motor, what's the best plan? This is a 2.1 Volvo, and it's a 21.5 foot boat, so not overpowered, will something swap in? Someplace to get a reasonable priced rebuild kit?

Thanks guys.

Doesn't sound good.

The fact that it turns a 1/4 turn and stops makes me think something may be broken internally. But who knows. I guess pulling the head and checking the cylinders would be the next step. See what you find before deciding on the next move. Repowering to a larger motor is an option but you'd need the correct outdrive gear ratio and motor mounts etc.

Finding a replacement engine, the same size, would most likely be the most practical assuming the outdrive is good...

Stick with the 2.1. B21s are (around here anyway) dime a dozen in the auto wrecking yards and can easily be rebuilt for marine use, so finding a good core is not a issue. 'nutcase

Finally got back to this project (did I mention I've got lots of irons in the fire? ;) ) and got the head pulled off. Good news is I found the problem. Bad news is that the rear cylinder had some water in it, letting the ring rust. I've got a ring probably 3/4 of the way around. I'm going to try honing it out and see how it looks. Hope I don't need a bore job...

Wondering why you didn't pull the plugs and try it in the beginning.
That was the first thing that came to my mind.

A little oil and some honing may clear it out.
