Hi, guys as stated I have a 97 50 horse Evinrude with no spark. I had this problem last year, messed with the ignition switch some and got it to work. I think the first step would be to disable the lanyard kill switch but don't know what wire it is and where the best place would be to unplug it. Help would be much appreciated.

Folks here may be hesitant to advise you on how to disconnect a safety device.

I don't want to permanently disable it I want to see if its whats causing the problem so I can replace it. Im not even sure if it is the switch it's just my starting point.

Re: 1997 evinrude no spark

well after some research I found out the black/yellow wire was the kill switch and when grounded kills the engine. I did a checked continuity to ground and there was none. I also unplugged the connector going to my throttle control assembly and jumped the starter and still no spark. That rules the kill switch and circuit out. I'm leaning towards a power pack, but I'm not sure how to test it and don't just want to throw parts at it. Anyone have any advice on where to go from here.

hi a couple of things come to mind:
-It sounds like a pack. But....
-I assume you took the black yellow out of the pack
-remove the ground wire make sure both wire and screw are clean and providing a good ground
-Remove flywheel and check center hub is not loose or has dropped off completely (be sure to tighten flywheel to torque spec. after inspection)
-If that fails to solve problem...choices are...sensor coils, charge coil or pack. Smart money says pack

Re: 1997 evinrude no spark

Well I just went out and thought I'd check a couple more things. I started by unplugging the 5-pin connector from the pack and cranked still no spark so I plugged it back in and decided to try this test I found on here.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=175048&highlight=power+pack+testing

As I went to crank to check voltage vroooom!!! It started. I don't know what I did but all things point to the 5-pin connector I had unplugged and plugged back in which is weird because I've unplugged and plugged that connector about 5 times since yesterday and I even added dielectric grease to it. Anyway, it works and hopefully it was just a bad connection.

Could be a wire going into the powerpack making a connection after fiddling with it. I wouldn't be surprised if it loses spark again. Those connectors rarely give issues unless there is corrosion. I hope all works out and it's just that.

I hope so too. I tried wiggling the connector around while it was running to see if it would cut out but it didn't. I put dielectric grease on it yesterday just in case it was a bad connection but made no difference. It makes me kind of nervous not really knowing if it actually was the connection or not, but there's not much else I can do but wait and see if it happens again. I had the same problem last year after sitting for a while but fiddling around with ignition switch made it work my guess is it was a bad connection at the ignition switch.
