ok gurues, my tilt and trim when raised will not stay up it slowly goes down, so my question is is it a leaking seal or what could possibly be the issue? Air in the line, need to be blead, low on fluid? The motor sat up for 5 years in the locked position soo?

Next question is when I engage the starter it sticks in the up position so I lubed it with wd 40 now it sticks in the up position and isnt catching the push rod? just spins should I not have done that? Also I was using a battery with a couple dead cells so isnt full power..... Please gurues I need some good advice. Want to try to start it tomorrow!

Oh and any advice on removeing the flat head screw for the water jacket to add a teltale?? Broke 3 bits with the hammer driver....

Since it is an 85HP then it is before mercury took over and there is zero chance of cheap ATF. Which is good news. There is also nearly zero chance that you need a full overhaul. 98 out of 100 times it will be the check valves in your pump (aka valve body). You can try DIY but it really just isn't worth messing with. So few people get it right and there are no manuals to help.

As regards five years in storage ... maybe. If it wasn't blocked up then the seals could have gotten fused onto two opposite faces and been torn when you operated. More likely your engine is over 20 years old and its just age. Kind of like why do tires dry rot even if you keep your collector car up on blocks? It just gets old.

air in line doesn't cause bleed down.it just causes the motor to bounce a little. Low on fluid doesn't cause bleed down either. Low fluid makes the system go up halfway and stop. No bleed down - it stays at halfway.

She runs! A couple of other ?s.

She runs! A couple of other ?s.

Thanks yall finally got the right voltage to her and she turned over maybe 3 times and bang fired up!! Now I need to change the water pump tomorrow and check the thermostat because as she ran the overheating alarm sounded......

I am in the process of adding a telltale with a 90 and a barbed fitting so itll go side ways. instead of straight up but the impact that I used after breaking 7 flat head tips and only turned a quarter of the way caused the flat head bolt to strip on the head so I will have to drill it out and hopefully use and easyout. Any suggestions?

I will need to get new control cables for the throttle and the gear shifter, any ideas on cheap and good retailers? I measured them to be 14 feet.

Oh and also when I put the motor back on the boat foot oil had come out, not alot, 3 ounces maybe? Is this normal when you have the motor laying down?

If your repairs haven't caused it to leak.Stop with the telltale. It sounds like the alarm works good. Those motors when running flush water out 2 holes on the back just look there.
That gunk oil might be from old gas laying in there.J

Tell tale?

Tell tale?

Why not add the telltale? I mainly want it for when im running it that way I can visually see that the motor is recieveing water... Found the cables on some jet ski site for 21 a piece!

How difficult is it to rebuild the water pump on these? Also is their a faq on dropping the lower unit?
