Re: 7.5 scott atwater water pump

1960 model year

If it's a one piece leg like the old 5 hp then there should be about 15 screws at the top of the leg. remove those and you can access the water pump. Is it a Bail-o-matic. If so sometimes that impeller is good. They will be stacked on top of one another with a plate in between. Swap the impellers and see if that works. I can't remember if it was the top or bottom that's for the bailomatic. When you replace it though figure out which one it is as you only have to replave the cooling impeller if you not going to use the bailing function. Also the Scotts have very small pee-holes. Run a weedeater sting up in there and clean it out and try that first.

If it is the low profile motor, you are going to learn to hate it unless you are super dedicated. The early ones did not have a shift rod disconnect and you have to start at the flywheel nut and work your way down. Yes, the goal is to remove the powerhead.

Later models have a shift rod disconnect which is accessed by slightly lowering the gearcase. I don't think the 1960 qualifies for that though.

I don't know if Brian has those impellers, but worth a shot: http://www.chrystine.com/impellers/order.html

Is the impeller still in ok enough shape to get dimensions from. I know that I have merc impellers in my 10 hp Scott, they were less than $10. Merc dealer did the work, complete tune up even for like $60 out the door couple of years back.
