25 hp Johnson forward gear problem

I have a 78 25 hp johnson that jumps out of forward gear if the engine gets over idle speed. It starts chattering and the shift cable starts jumping. If I hold pressure on the shift arm at the motor, it will go a little faster than idle but still jumps out. I have tightened the shift cable to be sure it can engage all the way. Is the problem in the shift shaft or do I have a problem with dog gear in the foot or something else?

If it is definitely all the way in gear by shifting manually then you probably have a worn dog.

If it is as bad as you describe, the problem has been ignored far too long. Expect to find the dog AND gear are worn out. You will be lucky if the linkage isn't beaten to death also. Sorry, there is no easy/cheap fix, you have to bite the bullet and do it right.

Thanks, thats what I figured. May be in luck though, Had a neighbor who thinks he has a complete lower unit off another in good shape. Not a bad job to fix this one except the parts are pricy!
