Worked on my sea water pump

I have a bravo pump on my boat. I bought the 1 piece kit to "upgrade" my old 2 piece.
According to the manual there is a large o-ring. My new pump housing had the large o-ring already installed but included one in the bag of hardware. I'm right in assuming there is only one o-ring, correct?

I made sure to torque the bolts to 10 ft/lbs and used blue loctite, don't want any leaks. Also tightened in a cross pattern.

Re: Worked on my sea water pump

OK, finally got a chance to reinstall the pump, and it's still leaking. Not sure what I need to do now, maybe rebuild the nose section of the pump?

Can anyone give me advice on rebuilding the nose section, and what parts I will need for that?
I have a clamp style bracket, I see that I need to remove the bolt but how the heck do you remove the bracket from the nose piece of the pump?

Have you looked in the OEM service manual? It should have all the info you need.

WHERE is it leaking?

It is hard to tell while it is installed, but it seems to be coming from under the pump where the body goes together. There was a large o-ring already installed. The small "square" o-ring seemed to be a mess on the old one so I put the new one in.

I'm feeling like saying the hell with it, and buying a $400 brass bodied pump.

*edit* bought a new Jabsco for $260...

Still need to know how to remove this clamp style bracket, not seeing it in the manual.

I know I remove the bolt, but then what? Press it out?

You still need a press to put it back on. Don't try to beat it on with a hammer. Plan B rarely works:)

Thanks Ensign, nothing is ever easy! I don't have a press, I really should, so I guess I'll buy one.

Re: Worked on my sea water pump

Got the pump yesterday. It is a new, old stock pump. It had an impeller in it that the seller was worried about it setting up by it sitting for a while.
These impeller marks are on the end cover, should I try and remove them? What's the best way?

The plate must be smooth to achieve proper suction, so if you feel anything at all, try to get it off. Looks like it might just be a little rubber residue maybe? If so then a razor blade or lacquer thinner should get it. If the plate is actually eroded a little, take some 400 sandpaper to it until it's good.

Thanks Rob! It was never used so it doesn't seem eroded, and I can't feel it at all. I'll clean it with some thinner, and put a straight edge on it just to be sure.

Do I need to press off the actual clamp style bracket, in addition to the flange? Seems like it's not wanting to move.

Re: Worked on my sea water pump

Sorry to keep replying to myself here, but apparently no one has swapped a clamp style bracket here?

Reading different manuals, it appears I only need to press the hub on and off it the nose section that needs rebuilt.

The hub(flange) is the same size as the nose piece, so the clamp should go on over the hub.

Any thoughts? Has anyone here installed a clamp style bracket?

Re: Worked on my sea water pump

OK, got her done! No leaks.

You do not need to press the hub/flange off to change the bracket. You remove the bolt, and I used a socket on an extension and pushed the old pump out of the bracket. I put the new one on the same way. The hub.flange is the same diameter as the nose of the pump.

Hopefully this will help anyone doing this in the future. ;)
