So I have been have a very uniqe problem. My mechanic who is rather good is still stumped. Heres the deal.

A few weeks back I launched the boat for the foirst time this year. I jumped into fire it up and.......DEAD...What, no way. I was pissed. Long drive to launch and this is a big boat 25'searay. Anyhow, I remember my mechanic told me I would need batteries. Not to be made to look like a fool, I went to a closer launch and bought and installed 2 brand new 1000CA batteries.

Launched it.....and again DEAD.

OK, Im thinking. This mechanic did something to my boat. I took the boat back dropped it off and waited for him to call me and tell me it was a starter problem. When he called,(scratching his head) he says, I dont see the problem, it fires right up...everytime... WHAT, no way!!!!

Anyhow, he decided here is what we can conclude. How do you launch the boat? I tell him back the beast down and give it a shove in the last second to get it off the trailer........AH HAH he says. Your getting water into the manafold and thats whats causing the engine not to turnover. Either back the boat in slowly or drop the motor before you enter the water.

So this weekend I took it out and I'll be damned it started right up. But....I got back to the boat launch to trailer the boat and need to start it back up and drive it onto the trailer. BAM, it wouldnt start. Nothing DOA. What the hell is the problem here. He put all new wiring in. He put a new ignition switch in. He put a new battery swith in and he checked the starter with an amp meter and still it does this intermitantly. So here is the symptom once again. Maybe someone here has had this happen.

When its happy, VAROOM it starts right up and runs like a bat out of hell. When it's cranky, turn the switch and NOTHING. It's as if the battery was dead. It would crank, click or nothing. Anybody have a clue as to what he might be misssing. I sure thought his last idea was the culprit but when I got back to dock and tried to trailer it and it wouldnt start, I got to tell you im stumped. Open to all suggestions.

You know what? I bet this is it. The throttle is very sticky and is harder than hell to get in and out of gear sometimes. I didnt know there was a neutral safety switch.

If it's that hard to move, maybe it's time to find the problem and fix it. They should shift easily.

I guess I need a new mechanic. I told him I think it might be the "Neutral Safety Switch"(NSS) and he shook his head with a sarcastic NAHHHHH, I dont think so. Anyhow, I took the boat back home and finally got it to do the same symptom. I wiggled the control back and forth and still nothing. I took the control out of the dash and determined the NSS was built inside the control box. I made a daring decision and decided to snip the wires going into the control box. I tied them together and BADABING it started right up. 100% that it was the NSS. So now I guess i will need to replace the whole control since it has the NSS built in. Thanks guys for all the input. Since my mechanic wouldnt have thought it was the NSS you guys probably saved me a fortune in all his "ASSUMPTIONS". Know where I should go to get a replacement shifter?
