Guys:

I have a '71 Evinrude 85hp (Hydroelectric). I have replaced impeller and am in the process of mating lower unit to main body. Does anyone have advice for how to get the selenoid wire back through powerhead base???

I know that I should have used a guidewire when pulling it out, but too little too late now.

I have tried to feed a wire from the topside (base of powerhead), but it snags once I get it a couple of inches in.

THANKS!!! in advance for the assistance.

I was going to tell you what you just said yourself, so I don't have to. I don't know, I've never made that mistake, so don't know how hard it would be to get a wire back down through there. But surely it must be possible. Using a flashlight to look up in there??

Yeah used the flashlight. Can't see enough make progress. Tries the manual as my guide to see what could be in my way, but does not paint a clear picture for me.

Hoping to find someone who has made the mistake.

Guess I need to find a little patience!

F R: Thanks for the response.

UPDATE: I used a rigid, braided wire (Picture hanger wire) and fed and re-fed until I got it from the top hole in the base of the powerhead to come out where it should at the end of the exhaust housing.

One of my pet peeves is the guys that post to ask their super important questions, but never post an update to let everyone know of the advice helps... So my update has been posted!

Thanks again.

Side note in thread-

No manual yet (slapped my own hand already for that:(), but need to get to the water pump on a '72 65 HP. wiring I assume is in the way... will present itself when the LU is dropped. I am catching on that a guide wire will need to be installed to get wires back in for re-assemble of LU to motor. Any coming pitfalls presented by the hydro-electric that you can warn me of?

I'll be watching closely as well. I'm about to do my impeller on my '72 65hp.

Make a long wire hook, and with the aid of a flashlight, snag the wire, and pull it down. Most any wire will work as a guide wire. We used any old piece of trailer light wire.

Manual will be here tomorrow... YEAH! I'm prob'lly going to get ambitious and start tearing down tonight. FYI... Here in the Pacific North West a switch for the Hydro-Electric is around $300.00! Mine's not working quite right, but I'll manufacture a solution... More time than $$$ for right now!

I used a fish tape that was narrow and fit through the hole nicely.I taped the wires to it and pulled it through. I believe I bought the fish tape at Harbour freight.

Re: Hydro Electric Selenoid Wire Reinstall

All back together... minor chaffing on wires, but the string trick worked well. None ofthis had been apart since '72 so it took some serious force to get things apart. Now getting the switch working right ($350 for new switch) is next...
