Bring your volt meter next time you get the boat out to the lake.

Re: boat won't start on lake

I was told several years ago if it doesn't run in the water it is a ground that is the problem and in the water it shorts out through the water. But my problem was different than yours. I was told to take jumper cables hook one end to the negative on the battery and the other end on the back of the block somewere and see if it will start. Also like others have said take a volt meter just in case.

Do any of the other electronics work when this condition occours (radio, trim, etc)? The only electrical item that would be affected by putting the boat in water is a depth finder or trim senders. Im curious about the ground issue or if it is in neutral. If the engine was taking in water it would hydrolock on land when it was started or at the very least rust to hell inside.

I would be fixing the neutral safety switch before you even start the boat sounds very dangerous. Also if it starts on the muffs with it hooked that can't have anything to do with it.
