Wired battery switch wrong?

Ok... hubby wired up the battery switch as stated in the link below:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2274433

He wired the bilge pump directly to the battery, and (ONLY because the cord was not long enough) he wired the radio directly to the battery. We simply have to buy more cord in order to extend the radio wire to the "com" connector on the battery switch. Seems straight forward, but here's the confusion... The radio works fine until you turn the switch to "off" - then the radio goes off (and we can only assume the bilge pump does too) even though they are wired directly to the battery.

What?!?

Thanks for your input!

Re: Wired battery switch wrong?

There should be no reason your stereo and bilge pumps turn off or do not have power if they are wired directly to the battery. The only wires that go to the battery switch are the red ones (hot wires)...

I don't know if the switch is wired wrong or not, but if it is wired exactly as the picture in the link you provided, it's correct...

Double check the power (red) and ground (black) wires for both your bilge and stereo are directly connected to a battery...

Sounds like someone wired the NEG to the switch. There by eliminating the ground with the switch off.

OK I looked at the diagram you wired from. The COM part is in error. If you hook to the COM post how will anything work with the switches off? That is what the switch is for. In OFF NO power to the com post. Radio and bilge must be direct to one battery or the other. Either direct to battery or to the associated post on the switch. Usually NOT the starting battery.
