I just bought a Mercury Black Max 150 serial #6465060. The previous owner lived in Denver and said he had to make bigger holes in the jets so the engine would run properly in the high altitude of Denver.

Now that I have the engine here in Minnesota it's not running quite right so I want to replace the "jets". I have searched the Internet to find information about "jets" on the engine but I can't find anything. Is there another name for the "jets" the seller is refering to?

Also does anyone know about how much these are going to run me $?

Thanks for all the help.

Where in MN?
Black max don't tell me much. Is it an inline, or a V6?

If it's a v6, and you can get the numbers off one of the carbs, I can tell you what standard jetting is.

If it ran right in Denver, it's running lean here in MN. Don't run it like that, or you'll burn it down for sure. Hope you haven't hurt it yet.

hope it helps

Lake Lizzie in Minnesota, near Detroit Lakes.

It's a V6. As soon as it started sounding funny I shut it down and haven't ran it since.

Not finding the numbers on the carbs though.????

Re: Mercury engine jets?????

That comes up being a 2.0 L XR-2 engine. Could have WH9, WH12, or WH29 carbs on it. WH9 and WH12 use .048 main jets stock, would have been .044 in Denver. WH29 uses .064 main jets.

The 9 and 12 use a .098 bowl jet, while the 29 uses none. That's the one you see near the top of the horn looking down the throat of the carb.

The numbers are on the carbs somewhere.

Here's the table.
WH9 and WH12
Main .048
Idle .060
Vent .098

WH29
Main .064
Idle .056
Vent -None

It's a used engine. Unless you have a pretty good idea what the carbs are, don't guess. As you can see, different carbs on the same engine can use widely different jetting.

If you've run it till it sounded "funny", check the compression to be sure you haven't scored it.

hope it helps
John
