So, when in forward does it make grinding noises? If it does, you have one or more of the following:

1. Shift linkage not putting it all the way in gear (adjustment)

2. Shift linkage worn out, loose or broken

3. Clutch dog and forward gear in lower unit severely worn out.

It's all related. #1 & 2 will cause #3, and #3 will cause #2

Or you're prop could be spinning on its hub. I had that problem last summer, boat would move ok as long as there was a small load on the prop (low RPM), but just spin inside the prop once the RPM's went up.

I would pull the prop and make sure you didn't snap the drive pin. If the drive pin looks good, then it's a shift linkage issue.

Linkage sounds like it's not on properly, pull the cover and inspect.

If you can spin the SHAFT by hand when it is in forward gear, something is busted or loose in the shift linkage.

Then it's not fully engaging which means something is either bent in the shift linkage, the coupler between the 2 linkages isn't on properly or someone has had that phillips screw out for the shift yoke and not got it back in properly. On the side of the midsection you should see a plate with 2 screws. Remove it and then you will see a second plate inside. Carefully remove the top bolt and don't drop it. Loosen the other and rotate the plate downward. There should be a brass looking shift coupler, 2 screws go through it, 1 top and 1 bottom. They go through a notch on the shift rod to hold it in place. Could be disconnected.

Got me, you need to check it out the linkage where you can access it which is that access plate.
