Re: Banned from donating blood....for life!!!

Better than being banned for life from iboats. :D

So what is the false positive for?

Just a FYI....

In 1994 a drunk smashed me up real bad. I needed repeated surgeries. I insisted on not getting blood, and no one in my family could donate for me. I got lucky and although I was given fluids, I did not get blood or blood products.

At that time, blood testing was not as good as today, and aids was a real issue.

So you can specify "bloodless" surgery. They do their best, but no guarantees.

Imagine this, many American soldiers and veterans have been banned from donating blood because of Mad Cow Disease (actually a variant of Creutzfeldt Jakob disease). I spent 8 years in Europe...2 tours were during the Cold War and before the wall came down. According to the FDA:

The FDA recommends that the following donors be deferred indefinitely due to vCJD risk:

Current or former US military personnel, civilian military employees and their dependents who resided at US military bases in Northern Europe (Germany, UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands) for a total of six months or more from 1980 through 1990, or elsewhere in Europe (Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, and Italy) from 1980 through 1996.

Dones this ban mean you also cant sell your blood? Maybe the places that buy it will alow yours and then you can take the money and donate it to the red cross and you have done in a round about way what you wanted to do in the first place.

I myself cannot donate ever because I was stationed overseas for 3 years in Europe during the mad cow disease time period.

From Americasblood.org: United Kingdom (Total three months or more, 1980-1996), The FDA seeks to prevent transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob (CJD) or any strain of the disease (vCJD) through the blood supply. Deferrment period....Indefinite.

I don't remember exactly as I can't find the letter but I keep wanting to say "HTML antibodies." It's close. Some 4 letter antibodies. But it's a FALSE positive, meaning I'm as negative as the guy next door for this ****, but since their machines are made in China, I can't give blood. I feel it's the same as if I was accused of a crime, found not guilty after a trial, yet still treated as if I was guilty.

I don't have time to do much other than donate and run because my life is slammed. I mean look, this is my first free moment today and it's what, 12:45am! Giving blood is the quickest, most effective way to help someone in need. That's why I do it. Well, they don't want it, screw 'em.

Well try having a life threatening blood condition that precludes you from donating. I got HCV from a blood transfusion after I got hit by a car when I was a teenager, and found out when I donated blood. I've been through chemo twice and have had all kinds of complications. I will probably need a liver transplant eventually, and I'll have to pay cash for it.

I am glad they have this process in place, it's for the safety of others. Doesn't matter how mad you get, it's a good thing. Maybe take that anger and redirect it towards some positivity, you can do much more than just give blood. Hell, donating blood is easy, try and do some real volunteer work like my wife and I do, it will give you tremendous satisfaction.

Good thought...perhaps even volunteer with blood services group in assisting in running blood donor clinics or distributing information to encourage others who don't to participate. It's the extended way to encourage others to give and keep blood banks stocked.

It sounds like you are describing HTLV I or II antibodies and you should probably do a bit of reading on the subject since you clearly have no idea what this is, but think that it's all a giant Red Cross plot designed to sc**w you. (and of course, those Chinese machines don't help...)

You said "But it's a FALSE positive, meaning I'm as negative as the guy next door for this **** "
Wrong!

A false positive is still indicative of some cause...probably inconsequential, but still a potential risk to the blood supply. In Canada we cut some corners on blood testing in the 80s, and many people paid the price for that laxness.

There has been some great advice and suggestions in here that you seem to have ignored in favor of abusive phone calls and navel gazing.
But you should also sense that as far as empathy, there is a lot of "Suck it up, Princess" in the responses.

This explains a lot:
http://chapters.redcross.org/ca/norcal/phys/geninfo_abntests.html
It says in part:
The abnormal serum sample is sent to our National Confirmatory Testing Lab for another more specific confirmatory/supplemental test. Results of these tests, usually available in 7-10 working days, are either positive, negative, or indeterminate. A positive result means the screening test result has been confirmed as positive. A negative result means the screening test result was false positive; to protect recipients we take a very conservative approach, and disqualify these donors.

Like it or not, the blood system caters to the safety of recipients....not the self-satisfaction of donors.

I think you are looking at this all the wrong way. You are now doing your part to prevent the onset of overpopulation. Way to go!

Re: Banned from donating blood....for life!!!

No, I don't donate to get the time off. I was banned LONG before I got the 2 hours off at school. I'm just mad that I can't help people for something that's out of my control. I take care of myself for many reasons, and so I have good organs and good blood to donate is one of them. Well, now it's like screw it, I can't help anyone anymore, party time!

The reason I'm mad is because I'm CONSTANTLY bombarded with people asking me to donate. And I have to make up some excuse why I can't because, "I've been banned because of something they found in my blood" conjures up images of me having AIDS which isn't the case at all.

Dude that sucks, you would think you could get a test that clears your name. THere are plenty of ailments that keep people from giving blood. Like some medications, having had some ailment in the past japanese enchiphalidis, typhoid, etc ,etc. etc. Sometimes it is hereditary, In any event, i thin you may be over reacting, your probably the only one thinking aids. and if you are thinking aids all the time perhaps you should get an HIV test to be sure... In any event there are plenty of ways to others.

The EXACT same thing happened to my dad. The scary thing is he donated blood for YEARS after apparently being effected. He went through the whole chemo thing at the NIH with no success. It has not yet affected his health fortunately.

Give him my best.

I have a genotype(1a) that is supposed to be very "curable" to the chemo garbage. I went through it twice and while I had a significant reduction of the virus,. it's still there, lurking. I quit smoking and drinking years ago as those are the two worst things you can do your liver.
I think the chemo(interferon and ribivarin) has actually caused me more physical, and even mental issues, than the disease has.
I fired my last gastoentorologist because he told me on the phone I was cured, and even shook my hand when I went in to see him, congratulating me. Then he goes "wait, I read these wrong, you still have the virus" I mean come ON! Idiot. You talk about going through some mental anquish, if I were the litigious type, I'd probably have had a case.

Re: Banned from donating blood....for life!!!

After coming back to the US after living in England for 13 years I was told I couldn't donate either. This ban went into affect after I had already donated 4 pints. That happened about 10 years ago.
