i recently aquired a 1964 mermaidand ive looked all over the internet for info about it and came up with nothing. basically all i need to do i relace the deck seats and possibly transom but that is iffy i might do it just because im doing the other glass work. what im trying to figure out is what the max horsepower rating is and load rating it is 16'' 7' so i was thinking 100hp possibly but im not sure. Also where can i get parts for a 1959 johnson fat fifty. so far i know i need spark plug wires and if i dont get spark after that ill check the coils but the motor is well kept and most of the parts on it are brand new. also was looking for some ideas on how to do the transom using seacast because i dont want to mess with that again and would automotive paint work good an a boat or should i go with strictly marine paint. any info helps thanks.

Re: 1964 mermaid

I believe that "Mermaid" is just a model name of SeaKing Boats. They were made for Montgomery Ward to sell in the 50's and 60's. SeaKing and Elgin (made for Sears) boats are basically the same and both were built by Angler Boats, a sister company of Penn Yann Boats. Nice find.

Nice looking old boat!

Good luck on the 'fat 50' parts... I've got two of them in my garage, hopefully I'll be able to get one good one out of them :)

Re: 1964 mermaid

thanks for the compliments guys. I still am having trouble finding info on this boat, I checked the manufactures metioned and still came up with nothing but there is a boat that looks exactly like it just a different name so maybe ill look for ideas on that. any guys know much about what kind of paint to use, im stuck between automotive paint to color match it to my truck or using marine paint. Would it be ok to use automotive paint? Im gonna put new wires on the motor tommorow so hopefully it will start keeping my fingers crossed.
