What Motor will interchange? Volvo OD

I have a 1986 Suncraft Pleasure with a Blown Mitsubishi 3.2 Liter motor and a Volvo Outdrive. What other motors can I replace that one with. They apparently only used the Mit. motor for 1 or 2 years and I would like to find something a little more common to replace it with. Any help would be Great!

Ayuh,.... Donno just Where you are, but I believe that motor has Never been used states-side...

Volvo has used Many Chevys, a few Fords, a Chrysler or 2,+ the Volvo "B" motors....
Oh, and of course their Diesels...

I'm in the same Boat. No Pun Intended. The Boat belongs to someone I know and they called me to help them with this problem. I have never heard of a Mit. motor being used either. I don't have the boat in my hands yet. Was just trying to get a jump start on things. I'll try to get some more info from him or wait until he brings the boat to me. Thanks for your help, Joe.

have your buddy look just aft of the engine.
he is looking for a borg warner velvet drive 71 or 72 series inboard clutch.
if it has the borg warner clutch its not a volvo but a star power drive.
the star power and the volvo 280SP look very very similar but are not interchangable.
star power did use the 3.2 mitsubishi.

On the Drive/Bellhousing are the Numbers: Ser. D71383, Mod. PSL20 and then another number: GO331. Does any of this help to identify the drive?

Pictures of the drive and the engine would help,, especially the back of the engine where it hooks to the drive.

Things are much clearer now. I have the boat here now. It's a PCM Drive and Transmission. After working on it for a while it seems the motor isn't locked up but the transmission is??? Dumb question but, if the trans is in forward or reverse, the prop should not turn freely should it? This one does. It appears that something has failed in the trans. Are there any common problems with these transmissions? I believe it said on the tag: PCM 40, 1.0 : 1.0 ratio.

The fluid was a rusty brown color (literally, as in water/rusty parts) and on the end of the dipstick was some milky oil. I didn't smell it but it did look pretty rough. I just wonder why the input shaft would lock up suddenly like it did.
A little history: The boat was running ok. Long story short, the mechanic who was working on it managed to break the dist. housing while changing points.??? Meanwhile it took the owner a year and a half to find a new dist. and get it installed. (so the boat just sat for the 1.5 years). Once installed he had the timing off and was never able to get it started. While cranking the motor over and over (trying to get the dist. right) it just suddenly stopped turning. Can't even turn it with a breaker bar.

As I said earlier, the trans doesn't seem to be going into gear. The prop will turn if it is in forward, reverse or neutral. Is there a bearing or something at the input shaft that could cause these symptoms? I just can't imagine what would break just cranking it over that would cause all of this.
