The fluid was a rusty brown color (literally, as in water/rusty parts) and on the end of the dipstick was some milky oil. I didn't smell it but it did look pretty rough. I just wonder why the input shaft would lock up suddenly like it did.
A little history: The boat was running ok. Long story short, the mechanic who was working on it managed to break the dist. housing while changing points.??? Meanwhile it took the owner a year and a half to find a new dist. and get it installed. (so the boat just sat for the 1.5 years). Once installed he had the timing off and was never able to get it started. While cranking the motor over and over (trying to get the dist. right) it just suddenly stopped turning. Can't even turn it with a breaker bar.
As I said earlier, the trans doesn't seem to be going into gear. The prop will turn if it is in forward, reverse or neutral. Is there a bearing or something at the input shaft that could cause these symptoms? I just can't imagine what would break just cranking it over that would cause all of this.
