Was wondering if anyone has a 1968 Evinrude fastwin, 18 hp 18802M, who could take a photo of their carburetor for me and post it here. I took it farther down than I really should have to do a thorough cleaning. I knew that I should have taken a couple pics, but figured I could remember where everything goes, I know, very dumb move on my part. If looking at the front of the carb, I need to see the left side, where the throttle and choke linkage is.

I also took out the throttle valve and can't remember which way is up. There isn't a photo in the repair manual and the photo in the parts diagram looks different from mine. There are two small holes in the valve and I need to know if they go towards the top or bottom. I broke one of the screws off in the throttle shaft so I'm either going to try drilling it out or just buy a new one with two new screws.

One last thing, I soaked the carb overnight in carb cleaner and now the throttle and choke shafts are very tight. I am assuming that I just need to oil these parts to get them to move smoothly again. Is that correct?

I know that I messed up a couple times during this rebuild so flame away!

Thanks, Keith.

Re: need help with 1968 18 hp

okay, carb seems to be functioning fine, all moving parts on the exterior appear to be traveling fine, but I believe that when I replaced the old float with the new one, I put it in upside down, as the bowl does not have any fuel in it. Could someone tell me which way the float goes in. I am going to take it apart again tomorrow and flip it around. The original float was in it when I replaced it, and the new one is a little different in design. The metal arm is not in the center of the float so when I put it in, and the carb is upside down, is the metal tab closer to the top or bottom of the carb body? When I installed it, I tried both ways. The way I put it in, the float sat parallel with the body, the other way it was tilted up a bit. In the manual it says that if the float is not sitting parallel with the body, bend the metal tab to make it lay parallel, which is why I'm thinking I put it in upside down. Just wanted to ask before I tear it apart tomorrow morning.

it should sit even with the body of the carb, make sure it is opening and closing the needle valve properly, thats where your carb gets all of its gas,,your float should be letting the bowl fill up then shutting it off when its full, like a toilet float, turning the water off when its full

Float valve needle contacts float arm side that's furthest from the float edge. Installed, float should be close to parallel w/carb body when carb is upside down. Just bend float arm so it's exactly parallel and it's set. Before installing to engine, blow through fuel inlet when carb is upside down. No air should pass. Flip carb right side up and do it again. Air should pass. Also, make sure the carb vent above the float in the carb body is free. Should connect to hole in front of carb if you blow air through (I use duster-canned air/straw). Good luck!
