Question about motor conversion!!!

I have a 2007 Mercury 9.9hp motor..My father has a 1983 40hp Mercury motor..Both are console motors not tiller...My question is can we switch these two motors..

We want to for sure...I just did not know if the throttle cable will work on the exchange...and I believe we have to change the plug for the motor to hook up to...different pins i believe..
