Mariner 15hp HELP!

I have a Mariner 15hp outboard that is made by Yamaha and I believe the year to be a 1975. The problem is I got it back from the mechanic and it runs fine at home in a large "bucket" full of water, but when I try to start it at the lake it will not run for more than 5-10 seconds. It is a pain to start on the lake but starts fine at home. What do I do next? He rebuilt the carb and he says the needle and seat are worn... I removed these parts and see nothing wrong at all with them. What do I do next? Thanks, Rod:confused:

Re: Mariner 15hp HELP!

Surely someone has come across this problem before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mariner 15hp HELP!

when at home do you have the motor in a nice warm garage? maybe there is a choke issue when you get tho motor out into cooler temps? Are you using the same fuel tank at home as the lake?

Everything is the same at home or on the lake. I can run it here at home, go to the lake and it wont start.

your carb doesnt know where it is... look for something that is diff from the lake and the barrel... all motors run like a champ in the barrel.. are you shifting fully from forward to neutral to reverse?... is this a new problem from getting back from the mechanic or is that why you took it to him?

Trim the engine up some if it's setting to deep in the water or at to steep of an angle it will be hard or impossible to start

Re: Mariner 15hp HELP!

The motor used to run great and had set for a few years until I put it on the boat and took it to my mechanic. I took it to him so he could go through it to make sure everything was good. He found great compression, relpaced the waterpump impeller, and rebuilt the carb. I cant raise the motor up any further due to it is setting where it is supposed to on the transom. I could possibly raise it up and inch but thats about it. Still dont know where to go from here.

Re: Mariner 15hp HELP!

might sound dumb, but is the relief valve on the fuel tank open? have you run the engine since you returned from the lake?

Re: Mariner 15hp HELP!

Yes I have run the engine when I got back from the lake and it starts right up. The valve on the tank is in the open position also. I just went out and raised the engine up as far as I can get it to go. I went up about an inch and a half and thats at the top of the transom where there is a piece on the inside of the transom that wont let it go up any further. I havent had the chance to run it like this yet as with chores most of the morning and thunderstorms coming in soon. Anybody else think this may help, it makes sense that it may be under too much pressure. The cavitation plate is now almost up to the bottom of the transom now, and I did put more up-tilt on the engine via the rod that holds the whole thing at any angle you want on the mount. Thanks guys keep the ideas coming!

sorry for all the simple requests for more info... at the water, are you keeping it on the trailer or is she actually in the water floating? if not in the water how steep is the boat launch?

She is in the water as normal but (today hopefully) I am gonna back her down the very shallow ramp and try to get it started again.
