First and foremost I am really green to this stuff so I have a newbie question.

Could someone let me know the best method of disconnecting the acceleration/reverse cables from my outboard. I am trying to remove the motor for transom replacement. I thought it would be obvious, like the wiring.......maybe it is.

Thanks,

Mark these cables first and pay attention to the way the barrels on are set on the pins... from top to bottom.. to release them take your finger and follow the pin back.. you will find a lever that rotates the pin with a detent... turn the lever so the little pin is straigh up and down and then the little pin will slip through the cables barrel and you can remove the cable the other ends of the cables are held on an pin by a sliding spring retainer.. dont remove the screws.... the retainers slide to the back with some pressure....

Re: Disconnecting cables from outboard

Ok, thanks for the replies first of all. I got the barrels off of those pins last night, figuring that was part of the dissassembly. After that, I'm a little unsure what to disconnect to remove the cables themselves. I got the motor the rest of the way off aside from these cables, so I'm anxious to get them off. Can I just pull the cables out of the larger black tubing in the picture? It kind of looks like some hydraulics or something, so I didn't want to do that until I was sure. However, I don't want to do it the wrong way and make a larger problem come reassembly. The easier for me to put back together, the better. I'm not all that familiar with this stuff or the terminology.

I have taken lots of pictures for referral later on.

Thanks again,

Jay

As stated above the area you need to look is in the lower right of your pic. You may need to look up a pic of an unattached cable so you will know what you are looking for. There is a part near the end of you cable that will have to be pulled out slightly & turned 1/4 turn in order to expose the end of your cable. once exposed it will simply slide off the pin it is resting on

Thanks for helping a greenhorn out gentlemen, info was very useful and I had both cables off in minutes.

Mike1245, I found it hard to understand your first instructions, until after I got the cables off, then it made sense.

I'm sure I'll need you guys again when I get the motor back on as it's not running 100%, although it may be a while till I get to that point.
