I'm working on a 1974 16ft super sport, removed the plywood flooring and in the process of prepping the seams and rivets for glovit. my question is I've got a bit of corrosion around the seams of the floor and sides. so bad that theres a small spot that has actually corroded through. what have you guys been using to remove the corrosion and what should I use to repair the hole and thin spots? Thanks in advanced.

Re: resto help needed

I would think a wire brush wheel on a drill, soft wire brush.
Cabelas sells a cold alum weld patch, never used it.
I have heard of alot of guys unsing JB-weld for various things.
I personally have not yet had to try and repair a situation like yours. I am sure other will give some good advise.

I have wire brushed it, but the corrosion is in the seam and hard to get to. was wondering about something chemical.

Absolutely it's fixable!! Welcome to iboats! :D

I will move this to the restoration section and we have had MANY other's that have faced the same dilemma.

Sounds like you have a plan and depending on how thin spots are treated and how the holes are patched should be an east thing. The gluvit will be the final icing on your cake ;)

Re: resto help needed

havent had a chance to take photos yet. have another question, how well does gluvit work to seal the new plywood flooring? also can I use 3m 5200 with the gluvit? either befor or after the gluvit? and can I use a automotive epoxy like ppg dp40 to paint the entire inner hull after gluvit is applied? Thanks again

Oh the gluvit will seal the plywood but it will cost you a small fortune. Fiberglass resin and csm is cheaper.

Yes 3m 5200 will adhere to gluvit after the gluvit is cured and visa versa but they must be cured first.

Check out my thread. I cleaned it up really well, then sealed everything (corrosion area's) with stuff called POR 15. Then i filled it with jb weld.
Your next challenge is to figure out what caused it. In my case the person who owned the boat before me, grounded accessories to the boat, instead of running the negative back to the the battery. That and they used non stainless hardware.

Patch the corrosion and find the source of it.

Re: resto help needed

so I finally got some pics. did alot of sanding today, and heres the hole. thinking I'm going to fiberglass the hole. one question, I want to gluvit the whole floor, should I glovit then fix the hole or fix the hole then gluvit or will it matter? I'm going to use ppg dx533 to clean the aluminum and I know that opens up the pores in the aluminum so I think I should glovit as soon as I do that. anybody have any experience with dx533 and or dx503? I would also like to paint the visible areas in the hull. if I gluvit the floor and then dx533 the areas to paint, will the dx hurt the gluvit when I rinse it off? thanks again

Re: resto help needed

I wouldn't patch that whole with fiberglass. I would use a small piece of aluminum on the inside with gluvit and jbweld or some other type of epoxy for filler on the outside.

Of course I don't have an aluminum boat so what do I know...

Re: resto help needed

That might be worth paying to have a patch tig welded in or the ever famous pop rivet and 5200 patch, be nice to get a picture of where it is in the hull, Good luck

I agree with the above 2 posters. Aluminum patch is the way to go on that hole.

Re: resto help needed

If you want to do it right, have a patch tig welded in. The surrounding metal will be thin as well. Tighten all rivets that need it and then use Gluvit on ALL seams and rivets.

Re: resto help needed

the hole is at the very center and back of the boat under thr transome brace. I don't think tig would work out very good because of years of contamination and as much corosion as ther is It would weld like poop. I've welded drilled holes in a 14' valco I had and it was near impossible to get it clean. plus the hole goes right underneath the seam of rivets for the transom. would there be a big reason not to glass it? how about the drain plug? added my location for you guys aswell. Thanks!
