ok - now let the hypoticating begin :)

35-45 wont run in a 4 stroke, but I'd do a non edjumated guess and say that in a 2 stroke it would. and I've personally seen some very hammered reeds - broken in half, split up the middle, etc - in a poorly running motor. either of those

that said, reeds only serve to hold the air/fuel charge in the xfer ports or case until the piston top closes the port off as the piston comes up on compression. they dont come into play on a compression test as it relates to the pressure #'s

orignal poster doesnt note much in the way of clues - when on the muffs did it smoke hard? are the plugs wet or dry? there is no history on how much wear the motor had. did someone before him rebuild it and hog the cylinders out with a hone?

I'm pretty green at all this 2 cycle stuff, I just don't understand what happens to all that air thats supposed to be getting compressed.

From what I've read that must be what they call blow-by. Wouldn't that go into the crank case through those things they call transfer ports. I imagine some would go out the exhaust too.

If it was to go into the crankcase wouldnt it keep the reeds from opening long enough to re-charge the crankcase with fuel? And if the reeds were cracked or broken, wouldn't it blow back out the carbs?

I'm confused.. There doesn't seem to be any of that happening in this extremely low compression engine. It must be some sort of 2 stroke phenomonom. A miracle perhaps.

Once they get much under 90 psi they get VERY hard to light.

I inherited a J/E 85 HP V-4 that measures 50 psi in each cyl, spun it w/ 24 V AND ETHER (Both definate No-No's) Not so much as a Pop or Fart.

Magneto ignitiioon (1964) that passes spark gap test, timing correct.

No Matter, it is simply a lack of compression.

I wonder what would happen if I hit that starter w/36? NOT

this may sound stupid but my buddys boat did the same thing. Turned out that 2 plug wires were backwards(1 on 3 and 3 on 1) Check that. It may suprise you

Heck Charlie, do that and you wouldn't need to worry about it starting. It'll turn 6000 on the starter. LOL
