I recently came across a 1973 evinrude fisherman 6hp outboard thats been sitting in a shed for about five years. Ive been tinckering with it for about a week now and nothing is happening. I'm getting compresion when i pull. The spark plugs look brand new in it i just cant seem to get it to fire up though. Please any suggestions.

Re: How do i start this thing !!!!!!

Actually it's in the Top Secret Files at the top of this forum thread list. There are several articles listed there that should help you with your 6hp.

If you still have trouble, after following the steps you find there, come back, tell us what you have done, and we'll try to help you.

The thing is that there are a number of reasons your outboard may not start. You have to go through them one at a time until you find the problem.

Since it's already in those Top Secret File articles, we don't duplicate the steps every time someone is having trouble starting an outboard that has just come out of storage.

Go look for that thread and you'll find your answer.

I went out today to check the gas lines to the carb only to find that they were dry rotted but clean all the way through i'll have to replace those im thinking that this might be above my skill set only so much a teenager can do

Actually, there's nothing a teenager can't do. You just need to learn how.

Go to your local library and check out a book on servicing outboard motors. Look for one that includes your model. If you don't have a library card, get one.

Did you read the article I mentioned on waking a sleeping outboard? The information in there will give you a step-by-step process to pin down what's wrong with yours.

It's in the Top Secret File, as I mentioned.

We'll try to help you, but you have to take some steps on your own. You're the only one who has the outboard in front of you, so you're the only one who can see it.

So, read that article. Get a service manual from your library, and learn how to do this stuff. It will help you immensely. When you don't understand something you read in those books or here, just ask, and we'll try to help.

We all started in the same place...not knowing anything about outboards.
