new to me 1979 15hp evinrude, well i got my new impeller and some other parts today, so i took the lower unit off and noticed whoever did this job before me didn't get the tube and grommet lined up:( the tube was bent to the left and half way on the housing, it mangled the housing a little but i think i can salvage it, the grommet was trashed so i ordered one. and i straightened the tube the best i could and smoothed the outside edges with a file. my question is does the tube look a little short? i noticed a score mark like a cutting tool was used for something:( and it only goes an eighth of an inch into the housing without the grommet, is this normal? http://

I don't know why anyone would cut a water tube off...but it takes all kinds.
It looks like it will be ok check temp and stream with engine idling and full throttle.
There is a different grommet used on the 15 model (no one has ever told me why)

I hope so. i bought this with out hearing it run, it was in a storage place, but checked comperssion and lower unit oil, brought it home got it running and noticed a very weak stream, after i took the lower off and seen it i wonder how it even did that:confused: now i noticed i can pull the drive shaft out just by pulling it so now i may have bigger problems:mad:

If the motor was an extra long shaft they would, that looks like hack job. The shaft will pull out if the key is wrong or missing, shouldn't unless the pump housing is off.

this engine came with a extra 5'' extension, it was a kicker on a bigger boat. dont know why they would cut something, like i said im new to this....

Does it still have a 5 inch extension??? If so I can tell you how to fix it with a nice new tube.

Anyways if it does chances are someone converted that motor, the tube doesn't look stock, look cut using a really crappy tube cutter. If you pull of the shaft extension you will see it coupled to the the short normal length tube coming from the powerhead. It's 6 inches of 3/8 copper pipe.

yeah i still have it but wouldn't it be to long for my 17.? transom? i think i would need more hardware also. like longer bolts and exhaust and such, now that you got me thinking maybe this was originally long shaft and they cut the tube with something? i dont know. but will it work this way? are im i gonna have to replace the tube?

I'm not asking if you still "have the ext in your possession" I'm asking if the extension is on the motor?

sorry misunderstanding, i bought the motor as a short shaft, he gave me just the 5'' extension with no hardware. do you think i can make it work as a short shaft as is? or do you think i should replace the tube?

Dollars to donuts this tube was cut. I know my extra long shaft tube was 10 inches longer, all one piece tube, no extensions. I'd try it as is as replacing it is a PITA.

I totally agree it was cut. in the picture i pointed out the score mark that they left. im an electrician by trade, the score mark looks to be made from a drimal or drill with a cutoff wheel. i got it as straight and round as i could. i hate trying to make chicken salad out chicken blank, i would rather replace it. so how much a pita is it? how many hours? aggravation?

Lower is already off so-powerhead comes off, about an hours work then unbolt the exhaust tube from the motor (4 bolts) then the copper tube slides out of the exhaust tube. You'll need powerhead to midsection base gasket and a new water tube and grommet.
