The shaft from motor into LU? Pulling out of motor, pulling out of LU?

It will pull out of the powerhead when you drop the lower unit, it will come out of the lower unit if you pull it out as well.

thanks bk, thats a big relief, im new to outboards and i have a 6hp johnson that the shaft is tight in there so i thought they where all that way. i had to take the top vent screw are whatever is called out to relieve pressure to get it back in.

Never heard of having to do that. Marinemech is right though, water pump has to be off for the shaft to come out.

here's a pic. of the screw i was referring to. when i was trying to put back the drive shaft, it was like pumping a bicycle pump, maybe not that much pressure, but it had pressure, and not being familiar with this i didn't want to froce it so i loosened this screw and it took pressure off. http://

Ah ok, that could make sense actually. As the pressure will build up when re-inserting the driveshaft. ok.
