well finally tried it in the water yesterday, not to good.. I have a 1882 johnson 140 hp on a 19' baja I am new to boats and boating . I just got this set-up and joined the forum and with help got it running pretty good on the trailer.. I have done the fuel system removed tank , drained and cleaned all new lines to the fuel pump that I removed and rebuilt also did a waterpump and thermostats along with plugs removed carb and cleaned them seemed pretty clean .. My problem was I took it down to the bay off trailer started it warmed it up put it to idle position and it would want to stall if you put it in gear stall right away.. On the trailer you can put it in gear no problem , I could not force it into gear due to the safety on the warm up lever, put it back on trailer and on the muffs and you can put it in gear, seems to run pretty good but my buddy stopped by who has a boat and says the carbs:( need to be rebuilt, looked for info in the search of the top secret explains rebuilding carb`s but is that my problem?? not sure where to go from here.. Thanks in advance Bill:confused:

Next time you run it on the muffs, verify if all 4 cylinders are firing. I had an old motor that ran good at home but on the water would die, found a power pak and coil weak. When the motor is in the water the back pressure is greater then on the trailer. Might have a weak spark and cannot fire with the additional back pressure.

Thanks ,I should have mentioned I thought the idle was pretty low only about 650-700 on the muffs.. I decided to rebuild the carbs anyway I had the rebuild kits anyway never done it before but their is a ton of information on here so I did it reinstalled and def easy to start and smoother idle I bumped the idle up a little by turning out the rubber bumper on the idle stop screw to about 900 have to find out what is the correct number for idle but i am guessing it should be in the water.. thanks for the advice I am going to try the wires and coil Thanks Bill

Re: Help needed stalling under load..82 johnson 140hp

When idling the cab butterflys are closed. The fuel at idle goes thru special idle circuits (passageways) which are different than when at any other throttle position. Often these small circuits will get filled with dried fuel and can cause the engine to have idling, sneezing issues. Cleaning these small passageways in the main carb bodies with an aerosol carb cleaner should do the trick. The idle should be set when the boat is sitting level in the water, in gear. Should be 650-750 rpm. Once set there, you will find it will idle around 900-950 in neutral and about 1150 on the trailer. If you use the warmup lever, the carb butterflys open slightly, (the spark also should advance slightly) drawing extra fuel from the other carb jets-assisting in a higher idle speed.

Thanks, I rebuilt the carbs yesterday including removeing the freeze plugs and the needle valve and seat adjusted the float as directed in the manuel and the top secret files ,great information their, it looked absolutlet spotless inside.. I did clean everything when apart with carb cleaner and used the compressor to blow anything out.. On the trailer I have it idleing about 900rpms on the muff`s.,I am kinda thinking the idle is too slow causing the sneeze I would run it down and try it the way it is (much smoother after rebuild) but it is pouring here today I am going to look at slow speed or idle again cause when I raise it , it will smooth right out just have to check rpm`s boat does have tach if it is 1100 on trailer I should be ok.. Thanks again I will post resultes
