Hi, I have a 1970 18hp Evinrude. I took it out and bent the gear selector lever. Of course I tried to bend it back and it broke completely off . What actually broke was the rod that hooks the lever into the housing of the engine its a small rod that broke. The motor runs like a champ, but is it worth fixing and if so what is the best way to go about it?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm looking at a shift lever on a 68' 18hp. If it is similar. The pin looks like steel press fit into the aluminum shift lever. If it is broken in this area you're probably out of luck. This one broke midway up the arm and I had it welded back together last week. It welds real poorly. It's an aluminum alloy suitable for casting.

There is a popular internet auction site where shift levers seem pretty obtainable. Some of the vendors have stock that is not listed. One in particular has been very helpful to me. If you'd like message me and I will give you their name. Send them a message.

And there are some very helpful people on here who will pop up and offer a part.

Take care

i think what you are referring to is the shift shaft. I'd definitely replace it. Remember, these 18's were pretty much the same for about 20 years. This particular part is interchangeable, and not a part that usually needs replaced. There should be tons of them out there with very little demand for them. I wouldn't spend more than $5 on ebay for one, but you may have to search for exhaust housings because the shift rods and shafts aren't removed.

I agree, they should be easy to find. You do have to pull the powerhead to change it though. Not too difficult unless it's a salty.
